Great Wall Marathon
It's steep, it's high, in places it's dangerous and it's unique. The Great Wall Marathon in China is one of the world's best adventure marathons. And if there is one word to describe finishing, it would be euphoric.
Runners cross the wall over the Huangya mountain pass in Tianjin province. The first 5km are uphill and the wall rises from there.
Runners cover 3.6km on the wall, over the mountain ridge, including 2550 steps. A narrow, steep goat track leads them back to road level and to the unpaved streets of nearby farming villages.
Marathoners finish with a second tough wall crossing in the opposite direction and a 5km downhill run.
Another word to describe the event and its location? Awesome!
Bath Half Marathon
There's something magical about Bath that keeps people returning, says Half Marathon organiser Andrew Taylor. This year was no exception. Entries to both the Half Marathon and 1.5-mile Fun Run sold out in advance and, on the day, almost 11,000 runners took part in the main event.
The Bath Half is a fast flat course, straddling both sides of the river Avon. It begins and ends in Great Pulteney Street, where the road spans 46 feet - one of the widest Georgian boulevards in Europe.
The two-lap course circles Queen Square, then follows the Avon out along Newbridge Road and back along Lower Bristol Road.
Manitoba Marathon
Participant numbers just keep growing in the Manitoba Marathon. This year almost 14,000 enjoyed warm, sunny, humid conditions in the various race distances - making it the second-largest event of its kind in Canada.
The main event is a "runner-approved" course, designed in 1980 as a visual treat. It is flat, fast, and shaded, passing through many of Winnipeg's loveliest residential neighbourhoods, popular landmarks and along the banks of the historic Red and Assiniboine rivers.
ITU Washington DC
Washington DC is the only North American stop in the ITU World Championship Series and organisers were determined to show off the city's best features.
After a swim in the Potomac River, athletes were treated to a car-free
course through the heart of the US capital, passing by the White House,
Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, National Mall, Smithsonian Museums,
Congress, Supreme Court, Treasury, Hoover FBI building, Newseum, Library of
Congress and National Archives.
The triathlon finished on spectacular Pennsylvania Avenue.
Albert Bartlett Edinburgh Marathon
Over 100,000 spectators lined the route of the Albert Bartlett Edinburgh Marathon on a fine sunny day with a pleasant breeze which was held on Sunday May 31.
With over 14,000 runners taking part, Martin Williams came home first in a time of 2:18:24 which is the fastest time by a Scot for more than 3 years. The women's race was won by Holly Rush of Bradford Upon Avon in a time of 2:41:38.
Many competitors ran for charity, helping raise around £3.5 million for more than 200 good causes.
Copenhagen Marathon
Record numbers participated in the 30th Copenhagen Marathon. The Danish capital attracts runners from throughout the world and they get to view some of the city’s best features as they make their way around the three-lap course.
From the start-finish line outside the Danish Royal Library, participants pass the majestic city hall, the famous Tivoli leisure park and the delicate Little Mermaid statue.
